Station in Disrepair
The Sena line,
the only railroad in Tete province (once important
transport for coal mined in the town of Moatize to the port of
Beira), was abandoned in 1984 during the civil war. Landmines laid
during the war still remain along the route. The
restoration of the Sena line along with the redevelopment of
coal in Moatize is a key factor for the future development of
not only Tete province but also Central Mozambique at large. |

Primary School
In
Angonia, one of the areas hardest hit by the civil war, most
schools were destroyed and many local residents were forced to
seek refuge in Malawi. Foreign aid organi- zations that
poured into the area after the war, such as DANIDA and LWF (see Links), have
put effort into school recon- struction and rehabilitation.
Still, the lack of schools, especially primary school class-
rooms, is serious and rural areas are in dire need of more
schools/classrooms and teachers. |

Malawian Border
For the local
residents of Angonia, Malawi is where business is. Transactions are made
in kwacha, the Malawian currency, which is widely
circulated in Angonia and along the border. For
many, Malawi is an intimate country where their relatives live
and/or they spent years as refugees during the civil war. |
