Erosion

Environmental and natural resources in the Study Area have been extensively exploited without proper management.  While the population density is still quite low, the extensive use has brought some areas close to the threshold of environmental capacity.  Forest resources have been degraded, particularly in highland areas, and slash-and-burn has been practiced widely in lowland areas.  Moreover, soil fertility has declined significantly in most productive areas of the Angonia plateau.

Baobab Tree in Coal Mine

Baobab trees are widely seen in the lowlands of Tete province but not in the highlands like Angonia.  The one shown left was found in Moatize, standing alone at the rim of a coal mine.  During the dry season (May - September), baobabs shed their leaves, accentuating their peculiar shape even more.

Coal Mine

The coal reserve in Moatize is most promising for early development.  It was once developed successfully before the civil war with the peak production at 600,000 tons/year.  Moatize coal has a well-established reserve of 2.4 billion tons and its quality is very high.  The coal price, about US$15/ton on site, is competitive as the international market price is about US$18/ton.
