Brickyard
Tete province
is abundant with red soil that turns viscous when
mixed with water and turns rock solid when baked, ideal for
bricks. The majority of business enterprises in the Study
Area is of micro-scale at best with only a couple of employees
at most, and the variety of businesses is still pretty limited. Brick-making is one of those few found in the
area along with carpenters and bakeries. |

Village Scene
Utilities are still things of luxury in Tete.
Access to electricity is very limited with only 1.7% of the households in the entire
province electrified. Telephone
service coverage in Tete
province is the lowest of all the provinces in Mozambique; mere 1.7 phone
lines per 1,000 people (compared to the national average of 3.5) in 1998. |

Carrying Water
A lot of people
in rural areas have to travel a long distance to get to
fountains and wells for daily water. As in other
developing countries, it is a job for women and children. |
