Well with Hand Pump

Water supply service coverage in Angonia is estimated at 26%.  Angonia has only one piped water supply system, five public fountains and 116 hand-pump wells to serve the population of about 130,000.  The only piped water supply system is in Ulongue, the district center of Angonia.  The system, however, is old and the quality of water, treated with only chlorine, is inadequate especially during the rainy season.  In rural areas, people rely on untreated water from natural fountains and public wells.

Irrigation

There is no irrigation scheme of commercial scale in the Study Area.  Farmers are generally not motivated to increase crop production beyond their self-consumption, for marketing opportunities are limited.  Micro-scale irrigation schemes exist but only along rivers and their tributaries.  The commercial irrigation scheme, once run in Angonia by the now defunct Angonia Agro-Industrial Complex (CAIA), has been de-capitalized and its facilities including a small dam degraded through neglect during the civil war.

Grain Storage

The Study Area produces surplus maize, which is usually sold to traders from outside.  Local governments also encourage farmers to save excess maize in store for low production years.  Farmers store maize in small huts made of woven bamboo with thatched roofs.  Communal storages are rarely seen.
