Paprika

In the Study Area, most crops including fruits have no commercial outlet.  Tobacco produced mainly in Angonia and Macanga districts is practically the only real commercial crop.  Paprika has been introduced recently in Angonia and Macanga, showing initial success for marketing.  The zone from the southern part of Macanga to the western part of Chifunde, at an altitude of over 1,000m and annual precipitation of over 800mm, is suitable for growing paprika.

Apple

Various fruits are also grown in the Study Area, including apple, avocado, banana, citrus, crab apple, grape, guava, mango, papaya, passion fruit, peach, pear, etc.  They are mostly consumed by the farmers and the rest sold locally or left to rot in the fields.  There are two exceptions: tangerine in Moatize, which is marketed in Tete city and traded to other districts, and grapes in Tsangano, from which once wine was made for local markets.  That is why fruits production data are scarce.

Maize Miller

Mash or mealie meal called massa, the staple food of the rural people, is made from maize ground and mixed with water.  Reportedly the Study Area has close to 300 grain mills that are concentrated in the urban areas of Angonia, Moatize and Tete city.  The number of grain mills has been on the rise as grain production has recovered quickly after the civil war.  Commercial grain milling has a good business potential in the area.
